Wilderness First Aid Courses

Photo (courtesy of the Outdoor Program): A simulated first aid scenario on campus.

Earlier this month, 18 Whitman students and four community members participated in a 10-day Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course taught through Whitman's Outdoor Program by instructors from the National Outdoor Leadership School. WFR certification is the industry standard for many outdoors-focused jobs, including professional guides, trip leaders, and search and rescue teams. The course is split between time spent in the classroom and time spent outdoors practicing skills (pictured).

The Outdoor Program offers two Wilderness First Responder courses each year, and the next round will take place during the first 10 days of spring break. The Outdoor Program also sponsors a 3-day Wilderness First Aid course and a 3-day WFR Recertification course during Presidents Day weekend.

Lauren Osborne Publishes Essay About Controversy

Associate Professor of Religion Lauren Osborne published a reflection on a recent controversy at Hamline University, "Freedom, Tradition, and Precarity at Hamline University. It’s not either/or at Hamline; it’s both/and." The essay appeared in "Sightings," the online publication on the role of religion in public life at the University of Chicago Divinity School. The debate around Hamline concerns academic freedom and a historical painting of the Prophet Muhammad, and Osborne suggests that a nuanced understanding of religion is required in order to move forward with any productive discussion about such a situation.
