When You Need a Break

We know that this is a stressful time of year, so if you need a break from studying or grading, why not take a few moments to enjoy someone else's unique perspective on life at Whitman?

Four Whitties Receive Fulbright Awards

Four Whitman College students and recent graduates have been accepted into the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fulbright is the largest U.S. exchange program, offering students and young professionals opportunities to teach and conduct research in more than 140 countries, with about 1,900 grants awarded annually.

 

This year's Whitman recipients are:

  • Lindsey Merritt '22 (anthropology and German studies double major) was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistants to Germany
  • Rhône Grajcar ’21 (History—Empires & Colonialism and South Asian and Middle Eastern studies double major) was awarded a Fulbright Open Study/Research Award to India
  • Caroline "Cello" Lockwood '19 (economics–environmental studies major) was awarded a Fulbright Open Study/Research Award to Italy
  • Sophomore Tuere Cunningham (major undeclared) was selected to participate in the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes 
 

Rosenberg Receives Teaching Assistantship

Adam Rosenberg '22 (philosophy and German studies double major) received an English Teaching Assistants award from the Austria Teaching Assistants Program. Through this program college and university graduates teach English in secondary schools, enhancing the instruction of English as native speakers, providing first-hand information about the "American way of life" and acting as representatives of the United States.

Book Rental Return and Book Buyback

If you rented textbooks this semester, they must be returned to the Whitman bookstore on or before May 17. The bookstore will be having book buybacks May 13, 16 and 17. Students can bring any book in to have it scanned and see if they may get cash back for it.

COVID Cases on Campus

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that in the past 24 hours, three people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines. 

 

The risk of viral spread is lower for people who are properly masked and following social gathering restrictions. Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission.

 

If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Employees should email Human Resources (hr@whitman.edu) to schedule a test. Students can be tested at the back door of Welty from 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and home test kits are available on the weekend from Residence Life staff or Security (509-527-5777).

The deadline for submissions is noon for the following day's newsletter, though submissions may be held for a later date according to space and editorial needs. By submitting to Whitman Today you also authorize use on Whitman's social media unless otherwise specified.
