Trio of portraits (from left): Jim Whiting, Zoe Ballering, Katey Schultz.

This week, the Visiting Writers Reading Series will feature a trio of Whitman College alum-writers (pictured, from left): Jim Whiting ’65, Zoe Ballering ’12 and Katey Schultz ’01.

Whiting is a multi-genre editor (more than 500 credits), a prolific children’s nonfiction book author (more than 350 credits) and a contributor to countless publications as diverse as Greece Travel, Northwest Book Arts and Seattle Times. He will be featured in a virtual event on Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. (registration link).

Ballering is a writer, teacher and the Assistant Dean of Admission Communication at Reed College. She has published a variety of speculative fiction and her collection of stories, “There Is Only Us,” won the 2022 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. Ballering will host a workshop on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Schultz is the author of “Flashes of War” and “Still Come Home,” both published by Loyola University Maryland. Honors for her work include North Carolina’s Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction, the Linda Flowers Literary Award, Doris Betts Fiction Prize, Foreword INDIES Book of the Year award and more. Schultz will host a workshop on Thursday, March 7 at noon.

Ballering and Schultz will both read from their works at a public event on Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. A Q&A and book signing will follow. (Flyer attached.)

Seating at the two workshops is limited. Students who are interested should email series director Katrina Roberts at robertkc@whitman.edu.

Donor Gratitude Event on Wednesday

Stop by Cleveland Commons on Wednesday, March 6 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to help the Development Office thank donors to scholarships and financial aid by sharing your gratitude. Approximately 92% of Whitties receive some sort of financial aid thanks to donors, and this is an opportunity to show them the impact their generosity has on our community. Look for tables in front of Cleveland Commons with supplies and some sweet treats to enjoy while you share your thanks.
