Starting in the 2023–2024 school year, Whitman College will offer a new cross-disciplinary concentration in Human-Centered Design. Students pursuing this concentration will experiment with prototypes and artifacts, create iteratively, collaborate within teams, interpret and respond to many forms of data and above all attend to the process of design as well as the end product.

With methods and approaches that increase intellectual flexibility and comfort with ambiguity, design-thinking can be relevant to any course. All faculty are invited to a human-centered design workshop from 4–5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning (RSVP here).

Facilitated by alum Katie Krummeck ’03, the hands-on workshop will introduce design thinking, which can help you create engaging, student-centered, real-world problem-solving exercises—while also enhancing how you teach content specific to your field. Participants will explore how this approach to teaching and learning supports the development of creative confidence in students while preparing them to be effective leaders in the new economy and changemakers in an increasingly complex world.

Krummeck is an expert in using the design process and maker-based instruction to create student-centered learning experiences that develop students’ creative confidence, optimism and problem-solving skills. She has coached school leaders, educators, non-profit leaders and corporate executives to develop their design mindsets and the capacity to leverage design to drive innovation.
