US Attorney Vanessa Waldref To Visit Whitman

Vanessa Waldref, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, will visit the Whitman College campus for an event on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in OIin Hall, room 157.
Waldref will be interviewed by a panel of three students on issues affecting the 20 counties in our region, including Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons and fentanyl. Following the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Ryan Barnes Appointed to Walla Walla Arts Commission
|
Walla Walla City Council has selected Director of Creative Strategy and Operations Ryan Barnes to serve on the city’s Arts Commission which meets monthly to advocate for arts and culture in the area. The commission is comprised of volunteers who provide input to City Council pertaining to local arts and culture.

Parteek Kumar To Publish Book on Machine Learning
|
Visiting Professor of Computer Science Parteek Kumar has written a book titled “Machine Learning with Python: Principles and Practical Techniques” that will be published next month by Cambridge University Press. The textbook presents the theoretical foundations of machine learning algorithms, and then illustrates each concept with its detailed implementation in Python to allow beginners to effectively implement the principles in real-world applications.

President Bolton To Hold Open Office Hours for Students on Monday
|
President Bolton will hold open office hours on Monday, March 25 from noon–1 p.m. in Reid Campus Center (look for signage by the Fish Ladder). Throughout the semester, students can drop by these sessions to share their thoughts or just to chat.

Dialogue & Dignity Series Resumes Next Week

The Dialogue & Dignity Series continues next week with Omer Bartov, Ph.D., the Samuel Pisar Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University. See the March 18 issue of Whitman Today for the full schedule of campus events, including a public talk on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in Olin Auditorium, titled “The Never Again Syndrome: Uses and Misuses of Holocaust Memory in Contemporary Global Politics.” (See attached flyer.)
Also next week, Ranjeeta Basu, Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Contemplative Practices at California State University San Marcos, will lead a workshop on Mindful Communication on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. (See attached flyer.)

Volunteer for Spring Into Whitman Days
|
April is an important month in the admissions cycle, with campus visits taking place every week Monday through Saturday. The Office of Admission is looking for volunteers for the two Spring Into Whitman days for admitted students taking place on Saturday, April 6 and Saturday, April 13. Please sign up in advance if your schedule allows.

Vice President for Inclusive Excellence John Johnson (second from left) recently presented at the 2024 Annual Conference of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education, together with three colleagues from the Northwest Five Consortium. The presentation was titled “Más Fuertes Juntos/Stronger Together: Building Persistence and Community Among Private College CDOs in the Pacific Northwest.”
