Spring Learning Opportunities

Feature by: Dr. John Johnson, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence

Snow covers the ground, with a driftwood sculpture (“Styx”) in the foreground and Penrose Library in the background.

We want to welcome everyone back to campus for the Spring 2024 semester. This is likely to be a semester filled with ups and downs, joys and challenges, and there will be an abundance of opportunities for our community to learn, build and engage with one another.

The Division of Inclusive Excellence (formerly known as Diversity and Inclusion) will continue to use Whitman Today to share information and resources with the campus each Wednesday. More details will be coming from the college regarding the Dialogue and Dignity initiative, but today, we want to announce a number of opportunities that folks can explore independently or in teams this semester to increase their capacity for advancing inclusive excellence and enhance their DEIA competencies.

  • Engaging Equity Live
  • Microlessons and Skillshops
  • Nonviolent Communication virtual conference
  • Antisemitism 101 for the Workplace
  • Understanding Islamophobia in the Global Context
  • University of Pittsburgh Diversity Forum

Additional details about each of the listed resources are available online (read more).

Inclement Weather Protocols

With the arrival of winter on campus, it is useful to review our inclement weather policy and procedures:

  • Delay/closure decisions are made following discussions between administration, campus security and facilities.
  • When possible, notifications about closures or delays are sent by 7 a.m.
  • Notifications will be via email or via the emergency alert system, depending on the urgency.
  • Safety should be your top priority. Take things slow and use your best judgment about the conditions where you are.

If the college is operating, but you are unable to get to campus:

  • Students should notify any relevant professors and supervisors.
  • Faculty members should notify their division chair and the students in any affected classes.
  • Staff members should notify their supervisors to discuss work from home or other arrangements.

A big thank you to Facilities Services for clearing sidewalks and helping maintain access to campus. Information on snow removal priorities is available on the website.
