We are fortunate at Whitman College to have ready access to a wide selection of artwork: small and large, indoors and outdoors. Included in this array are a variety of sculptures which have been installed on campus over the years—many of which were created by, or donated by, alums of the college.
If you would like to learn more about some of the sculptures on campus, this self-guided Campus Sculpture Walking Tour, created by Sheehan Gallery, is a great place to start.
From the tour guide:
Students Playing 4D Tic Tac Toe, 1994 (pictured above) “Tic Tac Toe’s cast aluminum figures represent both the intellectual and playful aspects of college life. Commissioned by the class of 1954, this piece was created by Richard Beyer, a sculptor whose realistic figurative works populate public spaces throughout the Northwest.”
Bonus sculpture: Visit the All Faiths Room in Reid Campus Center (when the room is not in use) to see Kim Nemeth’s woven sculpture "everything impossible once" (2022)—not currently listed on the walking tour, but likely to be included in future updates.

Daniel C. Smith Publishes Two Articles
|
Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics and Religion Daniel C. Smith recently published two peer-reviewed articles, both of which situate the New Testament Apocalypse of John within the religious landscape of Roman Asia Minor (modern Southwest Turkey). The first, “John of Patmos and the Appeal of an Exotic Apocalypse,” is published in the latest issue of the Journal of Biblical Literature. The second, “Purity among the Parthenoi of Revelation 14 and the Bacchoi of Roman Asia,” was published in the latest issue of NeoTestamentica. In each, Smith uses an interdisciplinary approach to the Ancient Mediterranean world, integrating philology and archaeology, Classics and Biblical Studies, and ancient history alongside recent work in Postcolonial Studies and Cultural Anthropology.
