Dialogue & Dignity Series: Mindful Communication

The Dialogue & Dignity Series includes speakers, workshops and conversations aimed at building appreciation for discussion that includes different points of view.
This week, Ranjeeta Basu, Ph.D., Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Contemplative Practices at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), will provide instruction on Mindful Communication. She is a trained mindfulness teacher and practitioner and facilitates faculty learning communities, workshops and trainings for the CSUSM campus community and beyond.
Basu has done research and taught courses in many different areas of Economics including International Economics, Gender and Development, Economics of Wellbeing and Econometrics. She is currently researching the impact of mindfulness practices on the wellbeing and stress levels of students from historically underrepresented communities in NIH funded programs.

Residence Hall Open Houses This Week
|
The Resident Directors and Community Directors of Stanton Hall, Douglas Hall, College House and Prentiss Hall will hold open houses for first-year students, sophomores and juniors to tour the buildings and see what a typical room looks like. A different building will host each night, from Tuesday, March 26 to Thursday, March 28. See the attached flyer for the full schedule.

“Movies, Museums & the Black West” Panel Discussion on Thursday
|
Associate Professor of Art History Lisa Uddin will moderate a panel discussion titled “Movies, Museums and the Black West” on Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Theatre at Hunter Conservatory. The panel will include Mia Mask, author of “Black Rodeo: A History of the African American Rodeo,” and Gwen Trice, founder and director of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center. (Flyer attached.)

Community Invited to Participate in Artistic Tribute to Kyle Martz ’07
|
Friends of Whitman alum and former staff member Kyle Martz ’07 invite the Whitman Community to participate in either of two painting workshops, on Friday, March 29 from 4–7 p.m. in the Fouts Center for Visual Arts on campus or on Saturday, March 30 from 1–4 p.m. at Art Escape in downtown Walla Walla. Participants will contribute to an art installation on campus, titled “All the Rare Birds,” commissioned from local multi-media artist Daniel Forbes ’93. The artwork will honor the memory of Martz and other rare birds that come into and out of our lives. Instructions and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP in advance. (Flyer attached.)

Elections Open for Staff Advisory Council

The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is running elections to fill Council seats that are opening up at the end of the semester in the following areas:

- President’s Office & Division of Inclusive Excellence (current SAC representative: Greg Lecki)
- Academic Affairs (Current SAC representatives: Emily Hamada, Sarah Bell and Victoria Wolff)

Staff members in those areas will receive an email with the anonymous voting form within the next week. The deadline to submit your ballot is Monday, April 15. Questions? Email sac@whitman.edu or drop an anonymous note in our campus mailbox.
