STEM Summer School Collaboration With CTUIR
|
As part of ongoing collaborations between Whitman College and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), several Whitman faculty members traveled to Pendleton, Oregon this summer to provide four weeks of STEM-focused study for CTUIR youth.
|
- William Bares, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and his Whitman students brought salmon to life on a gym floor through scratch programming and floor projection.
- Andy Fry, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics, and Albert Schueller, the Mina Schwabacher Professor of Mathematics, used interactive activities to teach the students about symmetry, pattern recognition and geometry.
- Nate Boland, Associate Professor of Chemistry, helped students analyze water samples collected from the nearby Umatilla River.
- Matthew Tien, Assistant Professor of Biology, led the students in studying termites collected from the Blue Mountains.

The 2023 summer school program was a great success—and plans are underway to continue the program in the future.
