Welcome New Faculty Members
|
Feature by: Mary Raschko, Associate Dean for Faculty Development
|
In the few days before new students arrived on campus, another diverse, dynamic group of Whitties participated in an intensive orientation experience—the new faculty.
The cohort is made up of 34 faculty members who teach across 24 different disciplines, and consists of seven tenure-track faculty, 19 visiting faculty, one new head coach, one O’Donnell Visiting Educator and six part-time adjunct faculty—including a few current staff members. They traveled from as close as Walla Walla, the Tri-Cities and Spokane and as far as Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Sweden. Each of these individuals, whether they are coming to Whitman for a brief semester or for multiple decades, will enrich our campus community in unique and deeply valued ways.
Faculty orientation stretches over 2 ½ days. Monday focused on getting to know the Whitman community and building connections among their cohort: new faculty heard from administrators and faculty leaders, talked with students, gained tips to navigate the transition to Whitman from second-year professors and traded stories about their interests and experiences while sampling food from local farms. Tuesday featured a range of sessions related to teaching, from equitable course policies and inclusive assignment design, to campus safety, classroom technology and navigating myWhitman. Wednesday they patiently completed required paperwork with Whitman’s dedicated Human Resources team.
Unfortunately, the wildfire smoke did prevent new faculty from getting a proper tour, so in addition to warmly welcoming these colleagues in the coming weeks, please consider taking time to show them your favorite spaces on campus.
