Long Tent Opens Today

photo of the Long Tent constructed on Ankeny Field in front of Maxey Hall

It’s time! After months of planning and preparation, we are pleased that today a Long Tent stands on Ankeny Field near Treaty Rock.

The entire Whitman community and members of the public are invited to the Opening Ceremony today at 4:30 p.m. Hereditary Chief of the Walúulapam (Walla Walla people) and CTUIR Executive Director Donald Sampson (Walla Walla, Palouse, Nez Perce) will lead the opening ceremony with longhouse ceremonial leader Fred Hill Sr. (Umatilla, Yakama). The event will include speakers, song and a buffet of First Foods.

Dignitaries and elders from local Plateau tribes such as the Cayuse, Colville, Nez Perce, Umatilla and Walla Walla will be in attendance, including Aaron Ashley (vice chair of the CTUIR board of trustees) and Thomas Morning Owl (Umatilla, Blood First Nation, Warm Springs).

Visit the Long Tent webpages for the full schedule of Long Tent events, reflections on the place of this architectural structure in Plateau tribal life and an overview of the educational opportunities for the Whitman community.

Staying Safe in a Campus Emergency
(aka things we hope never happen but need to prepare for)

Every other week, we share important information about Whitman’s emergency operations plan. We hope you will review this information carefully so that you are prepared should an emergency arise.

FLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE

In the unlikely event of a serious leak, flood or water damage on campus, take the following steps:

  • If there is a threat of personal injury, dial 911 to summon assistance.
  • Call the Physical Plant (509-527-5999) during regular business hours or Security (509-527-5777) at all other times. In particular, indicate if any valuable objects, art collections, books or equipment are affected or are in imminent danger.
  • Notify your supervisor, co-workers or Residence Life staff.
  • If there are electrical appliances or electrical outlets near the flood/leak, use extreme caution. If there is any possible danger, evacuate the area.
  • If you know the source of the water and are confident of your ability to stop it (i.e. unclog a drain, turn off water, etc.), do so cautiously.

Announcements

Students: Apply to be on the Council on Student Affairs

The Council on Student Affairs is a judicial board with faculty members and students that hear infraction cases of college policies (i.e. Title IX infractions, Sexual Misconduct Policy, plagiarism). They receive extensive training before sitting on this judicial board. The time commitment varies depending on how many cases occur. Training dates in the fall are mandatory and will be relayed upon appointment. This committee is critical to Whitman College and acts as the core of the justice system within the administrations Members are expected to be available for hearings, however often they arise. Those hired will work closely with the administration, gain experience in judicial action.

All applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis so be sure to apply ASAP! Submit the online application.

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that from Friday through Sunday, 14 people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines. Though the likelihood of transmission is low due to our campus COVID-19 protocols, it is possible that others may have been exposed to COVID-19. There is nothing you need to do at this time aside from following our campus COVID-19 protocols. Anyone identified through the contact tracing process as a close contact (within 6 ft. for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours) will be personally notified.

Important reminder: per President Murray's announcement on Friday, masks are now required in all indoor public spaces. Please wear N95 or equivalent masks, which provide the highest level of protection.
