Whitman Prepares for Incoming Students

Welcome Class of 2026 Video

This week, the Whitman College community prepares to welcome roughly 350 new students to our Class of 2026—as well as 20 transfer students from other colleges.

 

The incoming students represent:

  • 29 U.S. states
    • 104 from Washington state (28%)
    • 67 from California (18%)
    • 37 from Oregon (10%)
    • 11 each from Texas and Minnesota (3%)
  • 48 international students from 28 countries (13%)
  • 90 U.S. students of color (24%)
  • 63 first-generation college students (17%) 

Move-In Day is Wednesday. Let's give the Class of 2026 a big Whitman welcome!

Chemistry Student Receives Award

Kathryn Woodburn '23, chemistry major, will receive the American Chemical Society Colloid and Surface Chemistry Division PUI Nanomaterials Award at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society this week in Chicago.

 

 

Jackson Publishes Roe v. Wade Essay

Associate Professor of Politics Jack Jackson published an essay on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in n + 1 magazine. The essay offers a critical reading of Justice Alito's majority opinion and situates the opinion within a broader political context.

Reminder: Mask Requirement Returns

Mask use is required for indoor public spaces on campus starting Wednesday. This will continue for at least the first couple of weeks to minimize the spread of any new COVID-19 cases. We will return to a masks-optional status as soon as it is safe to do so. 

 

Building Access Changes

Most academic and administrative buildings on campus will be unlocked at card swipe entrances for specific hours starting today. Access using a Whitman ID card will be available outside these hours during regular hours of operation. 

 

Campus Returns to Regular Business Hours

Don't forget that summer business hours ended Friday and regular academic and business office hours resume today.

 

Reid Campus Center Post Office Hours

The RCC Post Office will be closed Monday and Tuesday to prepare for Move-In Day, reopening on Wednesday. Window hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Daily Delivery and Pick Up Schedule (Monday - Friday):
8-10 a.m. - All Campus Delivery and Pick Up
12-1 p.m. - Maxey, Library, Hall of Science, Olin Hall, Admissions, Alumni and Annual Giving 
2 p.m. - Memorial Building
3:30 p.m. - Mail transported to Walla Walla Post Office
4-5 p.m. - All Campus Package Delivery

Daily COVID-19 Update

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that since Thursday, five people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. 

 

Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. Mask use will be required during the first couple of weeks of classes. 

 

If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Rapid test kits are available 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m., at the Welty Student Health Center.

Submissions should be 125 words or less. The deadline for submissions is noon for the following day's newsletter, though submissions may be held for a later date according to space and editorial needs. By submitting to Whitman Today you also authorize use on Whitman's social media unless otherwise specified.
