Thinking About Working: Labor Day

Welcome to “Thinking about Working!” - a bimonthly article produced by the Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC).

The overall goal of these pieces will be to increase education and learning about how the churning global economy influences students’ opportunities to move in professional directions that are interesting, challenging and hopefully satisfying. Like all subjects of study here at Whitman, the world of work is complex, multifaceted, diverse, open to interpretation, and most of the time, incredibly interesting.

Today's article is about Labor Day, its origins and evolutions, and current trends in the labor market.

Premera Tips for Student Dependents

Are you a Whitman employee with Premera health benefits? Do you also have a dependent who is attending college somewhere outside of Walla Walla? Here are some tips to share with them to make sure they are getting the best quality care at in-network prices.

  • Help them to identify in-network care providers where they are located.
  • Have them download the Premera App, which they can use to show their digital ID card at medical visits, view their current medications, and locate in-network care.
  • Remind them that virtual care is available through the Premera App, 24/7/365 for primary care, mental health, and prescriptions.
  • Make sure they understand the difference between urgent care (lower costs, shorter wait times, limited hours) and emergency care (higher costs, longer wait times, available any time).
