Our Place in Walla Walla: Connections Conference

Feature by: Noah Leavitt, College Liaison for Community Affairs

Yellow and red tulips line the bottom foreground of the photo while a colorful statue, trees, and Memorial Building are slightly blurred in the background.

The Walla Walla Valley is home to many people committed to building a more just, inclusive and accessible community for those who live here now and those who will live here in the future. Some of these civic-minded residents are imagining social structures and practices that can lift up new and emerging organizations that center historically marginalized people in the Valley.

On Friday Oct. 6, Whitman students are invited to spend the day with nearly 100 local leaders from BIPOC communities as well as white allies to build relationships to open up creative thinking about our Valley’s transformation. This event—the Connections Conference, sponsored by the Running Water Equity Fund (RWEF)—will catalyze innovative thinking about what Walla Walla can become.

Thanks to generous support from Whitman’s Office of the President, up to 20 students will be able to participate at no cost. Transportation to and from campus to the event location (in town) will be provided and there will be a dinner discussion the evening before to talk about how to make the most of the conference. Students who want to join this unique gathering should note that it takes place during the October Break and will want to make arrangements to be in Walla Walla.

Important Announcement for Student Employees

Please be aware of your responsibilities related to the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect Policy. This policy is based on RCW 26.44 and RCW 28B.10.846, which require all employees of institutions of higher education—including student employees—who have reasonable cause to believe any person under the age of 18 years has suffered abuse or neglect to report this information to the Walla Walla Police Department or Child Protective Services.

If the suspected abuser is a member of the Whitman community, the abuse or neglect occurred on college property or college facilities, or the abuse occurred in relation to college programming, you must also make a report to Telara McCullough, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, at 509-527-5941 or mcculltl@whitman.edu.

To access a very brief training that outlines this policy, please log into the Vector Solutions platform. Under “My Assignments,” click on the course “Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect.”

Please direct any questions to hr@whitman.edu.
