Senior Spotlight

collage showing two Whitman senior students

They have done a lot (a LOT!) of research, volunteered in student clubs on organic gardening and veterinary care and community service, served in student government and started culture-changing podcasts. This year's graduating seniors are an amazing group who have changed Whitman and will keep on changing the world.

As we prepare for Sunday's 136th Commencement ceremony, check out the Senior Spotlight series on Whitman's Instagram for a glimpse of how a few of our graduates have spent the past four years and where they are going from here.

Whitman Blues Trail Crew Trip: Sign Up Now

The OP is running a weekend trail crew and horse packer-supported backpacking trip starting on the afternoon of Thursday, June 2, and returning on the afternoon of Sunday, June 5. The group will backpack into the North Fork of the John Day river canyon by way of Granite Creek and spend three nights camping by the river. Participants will do repair work on established trails in the wilderness under the supervision of and in partnership with the National Forest service district trail supervisor and volunteers from the Blue Mountain Land Trust’s Blues Crew. Learn to brush and clear timber and do light tread work on trails in the wilderness. There will be opportunities to learn about tools such as the crosscut saw and the grub hoe. This trip is free and open to any students, staff or faculty who are interested. All food, transportation and gear will be provided.

Upcoming Symposium on Community Engaged Learning

Join colleagues from the five colleges that make up the Northwest 5 Consortium at their first in-person gathering. The one-day NW5C Symposium will be held June 4 at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and is open to all those who are interested in regional community-engaged learning collaborations. The symposium provides an opportunity to make connections across campuses, identify common current issues in our region and begin developing proposals for future NW5C projects. Find details here and register by May 23 to secure your spot!

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

Positive COVID-19 cases in our campus community are noted in Whitman Today in compliance with state regulations. We also update the data in our COVID-19 Dashboard every Monday.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that in the past 24 hours, eight people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines.

The risk of viral spread is lower for people who are properly masked and following social gathering restrictions. Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission.

If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Employees should email Human Resources (hr@whitman.edu) to schedule a test. Students can be tested at the back door of Welty from 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and home test kits are available on the weekend from Residence Life staff or Security (509-527-5777).

“Whitman Today” is produced by the Office of Communications and is emailed Monday through Friday to Whitman College staff, faculty and students. All times are listed in Pacific Daylight Time.
