The Third Space Speaker Series returns on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. with New York Times #1 bestselling author Ijeoma Oluo.
Ijeoma is perhaps best known for her book, “So You Want to Talk About Race.” Regarded by many as a necessary read, the book was celebrated for its impact and honesty. Lindy West, author of the bestselling book “Shrill,” offered this analysis of Ijeoma’s work. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a writer have such an instant, visceral, electric impact on readers. Ijeoma Oluo’s intellectual clarity and moral sure-footedness make her the kind of unstoppable force that obliterates the very concept of immovable objects.”
Ijeoma’s work has been featured in The Guardian, The New York Times and the Washington Post, among many other publications. She has been named to the Root 100 and the Time100 Next List. In her forthcoming book, “Be A Revolution: How Everyday People are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World—and How You Can, Too,” Oluo aims to show how people across America are working to create real positive change in our structures. Looking at many of our most powerful systems like education, media, labor, health, housing, policing and more, she highlights what people are doing to create change for intersectional racial equity. She also illustrates various ways in which the reader can find entryways into change in these same areas, or can bring some of this important work being done elsewhere to where they live.
“Be A Revolution” aims to not only be educational, but to inspire action and change. Oluo wishes to take our conversations on race and racism out of a place of pure pain and trauma, and into a place of loving action. The book is both an urgent chronicle of this important moment in history, as well as an inspiring and restorative call for action.
Additional information about this speaker will be provided as the event approaches. But save the date and mark your calendars for Ijeoma Oluo at Whitman!
