Adventures in OCS

This spring 59 Whitties are studying off-campus in 20 countries. To get a taste of some of their Off Campus Studies (OCS) experiences this semester, head to the OCS blog: Student Voices from around the World.

Cassidy Washburn, a junior sociology major studying on the IFSA: Merida Universities Program, has written about los camiones (the buses she takes all over Merida, Mexico), her otherworldly experience exploring the cenotes (craters in the earth’s surface filled with groundwater), and the powerful way women in Mexico honor International Women’s Day. Washburn says an important part of her academic experience (taking five classes at three different universities) has been learning “to be a little more chill and okay with taking everything in stride.”

Meanwhile in Denmark, Isabella Buchter, a junior BBMB major studying through DIS Copenhagen, has recently blogged about the study tours that are part of her program, describing the “whirlwind of traveling” she did in March. Buchter and her Human Health and Disease Core Course traveled to Berlin to meet with physicians and other medical professionals there and learn about how the health care system there compares to Denmark and the United States.

Nate Vigdor, a junior biology major on the SFS Tanzania Wildlife Management Studies program, has started the fieldwork portion of his directed research project investigating species diversity in small mammals. Vigdor writes, “Our [research] saw us traveling across a very diverse slice of African landscapes.” Vigor’s research settings have included conservancy areas, a coffee plantation and near small towns, where he had the opportunity to meet villagers and school children.

May 9 is the deadline for current sophomores wanting to study away during Spring 2023. Current first-year students will begin the OCS advising process in Fall 2022.

Staying Safe in a Campus Emergency
(aka things we hope never happen but need to prepare for)

Every other week, we share important information about Whitman’s emergency operations plan. We hope you will review this information carefully so that you are prepared should an emergency arise.

Hostage Situation

In the unlikely event of a hostage situation on campus, Whitman will send out an emergency alert and may activate lockdown procedures. Anyone not directly involved in the hostage situation should remain where they are until receiving the all-clear notification.

If you witness a hostage situation on campus:

  • Immediately notify the police (911). Be prepared to provide as much information about the situation as possible.
  • Evacuate the area if possible.

If taken hostage:

  • Do not negotiate or attempt to bargain with the assailant; trained negotiators from the Walla Walla Police Department will conduct negotiations.
  • Remain calm.
  • Be cooperative.
  • Do not make threats or attempt to physically assault the perpetrator(s).

Student Life Committee Recommendations for Greek Life

In response to the Greek Life External Review released in Spring 2022, Whitman College’s Student Life Committee (SLC), made up of faculty, staff and students, released their own recommendations. The SLC report is available to read on the Greek Life Reports webpage.

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that from Friday through Sunday, six people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines.

The risk of viral spread is lower for people who are properly masked and following social gathering restrictions. Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission.

If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Employees should email Human Resources (hr@whitman.edu) to schedule a test. Students can be tested at the back door of Welty from 9:30–11:30 a.m. and 2:30–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and home test kits are available on the weekend from Residence Life staff or Security (509-527-5777).
