Thinking About Working: Whitties Helping Whitties
|
From Noah Leavitt, director of the Career and Community Engagement Center:
Congratulations, everyone, on starting this new academic semester! Nothing compares with the energetic launch of a Spring term, with summer internships and jobs just ahead for some, and graduation and next steps after Whitman for seniors!
Before we fully dive into this semester I want to share important, timely and highly relevant ideas that percolated through the recent Whitties Helping Whitties student-alumni networking events in Bellevue, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. A longstanding annual Whitman College highlight, these events are co-hosted by the Alumni Office and the Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) to give students opportunities to hear from knowledgeable and trusted voices about professional spheres they either are or might be interested in. The more than 200 attendees ranged from first-year students to highly experienced executives across myriad industries.
I had the good fortune to participate in the Bellevue and Seattle events and was impressed by how much excellent career guidance I heard. I want to highlight a few of these ideas which I believe are important for us on campus to be aware of.

Tech Tip: Email Lists (Listservs)
|
Any member of the Whitman community may post to the following listservs:
The Announcements listserv (announcements@whitman.edu) reaches primarily faculty and staff and is for promotion of Whitman-related news and events.
The Community listserv (community@whitman.edu) reaches primarily faculty and staff and is for promotion of non-Whitman, off-campus, personal and community news and events.
The For Sale listserv (forsale@whitman.edu) is the only listserv to use for buying, selling, trading, or giving away items.
The Lost and Found listserv (lostandfound@whitman.edu) is the only listserv to use to try and reunite lost items with their owners.
The Rides listserv (rides@whitman.edu) is the only listserv to use to find or offer rideshare opportunities.
The Students listserv (students@whitman.edu) is for general discussion of anything relevant to the student population at Whitman.
Please note that for time-sensitive posts, email list moderation is more sporadic during evenings and weekends.

Are You Boosted? Waiting? Exempt?
|
Did you forget to fill out the COVID-19 Bivalent Booster Attestation Form? A majority of the campus community has responded, but we need a response from everyone! The form can handle most scenarios, including exemption status or if you are waiting due to a recent positive COVID-19 test. Questions? Email covidtesting@whitman.edu.

Masks: Protect Against More than COVID-19
|
In recent weeks, you may have heard that hospitals in some areas are filling up with patients battling one of three respiratory illnesses: COVID-19, RSV and influenza. With that in mind, the current recommendation from our consulting epidemiologist is that if you develop respiratory symptoms, test first for COVID-19, and then, even if the result is negative, wear a mask while symptomatic to protect those around you.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that since Friday, two people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19.
Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Additional masks and rapid test kits are available in the front entryway at the Welty Student Health Center during normal operating hours.
