Whitman Students Help Plan Walla Walla’s First Día de los Muertos Parade

|
As reported on by the Union-Bulletin this week, Walla Walla’s long-standing tradition of downtown parades, now includes the first community parade celebrating the traditional Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Several Whitties recently worked with local business leader Manuel Perez to organize the event, including Peter Fitch ’23, Theo Delmonaco ’24 and Benny Vasconcelos ’24 (all three pictured above). Held in the downtown corridor close to campus, the Sunday, Nov. 5 event included music and booths at Walawála Plaza and a public ofrenda (altar) at Grandma’s Kitchen, Perez’s restaurant.
Día de los Muertos is an annual holiday held on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 that is widely celebrated in Mexico. Customs and traditions vary regionally, but all aim to honor loved ones who have died.

Kaitlyn Patia Publishes Article in Journal for the History of Rhetoric
|
Assistant Professor of Rhetoric, Writing, & Public Discourse Kaitlyn Patia recently published an article titled “Feminist Movements: The Role of Coalition, Travel, and Labor in the Third World Women’s Alliance” in the Journal for the History of Rhetoric. The Third World Women’s Alliance (TWWA) was a pathbreaking organization formed by women of color in 1970 (and active through 1980) that organized across the expansive identity of Third World women. The TWWA was committed to combating the intersecting oppressions of racism, sexism and imperialism through coalitional activism that traversed national borders. In her article, Patia analyzes the role that movement (through travel) and bodies in motion (through the shared labor of working together) played in the coalitional activism of the TWWA.
