Celebrate Culture From the African Continent

The Whitman African Student Association (WASA) is pleased to invite the Whitman Community to a series of events celebrating culture from the African continent, leading to the annual Taste of Africa event next week.

This week, music and dance group Gansango (pictured above) will be on campus for two days of performances, classes and workshops. Gansango is directed by Etienne Cakpo, originally from Benin, now a Seattle-based choreographer and teacher. These events are co-hosted by the Department of Theater and Dance and WASA. Additional support is provided from the Ashton J. and Virginia Graham O'Donnell Endowment in Global Studies.

Thursday, April 11:

  • 8 p.m. - Gansango music and dance performance in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. (Flyer attached.)

Friday, April 12:

  • 4:30 p.m. - Gansango community dance workshop in the Dance Studio. (Flyer attached.)
  • 6:30 p.m. - Gansango community percussion circle outside near Cleveland Commons. (Flyer attached.)

Next week, WASA will host the annual Taste of Africa event, celebrating the rich tapestry of the Whitman African community through music, dance, fashion and food.

Saturday, April 20:

  • 7–9 p.m. - Taste of Africa in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. (Flyer attached.)

First Year Golfer Tops Spring Classic Leaderboard

At the recent Northwest Conference Spring Classic, Mason Remington ’27 took home the top individual title, finishing the tournament three strokes ahead of the second place finishers. Both the Whitman men’s and women’s golf teams finished the tournament in second place and will compete in the Northwest Conference Championship later this month.

“La Misma Canción” Artist Talk Tonight

Whitman College will host an artist talk by visual artist Mark Menjívar on Wednesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. Menjívar will present his current public, participatory artwork focused on the migration of peoples and birds across borders. Spanish interpretation will be provided. The event is free and open to the public. (Flyer attached.)

 

Strategic Planning Feedback Session Tomorrow

All faculty and staff are invited to attend a feedback session for the “Vibrant Campus Community for Staff and Faculty” strategic priority. The final session will take place on Thursday, April 11 at noon in Reid G02. Lunch will be provided for the first 25 participants. A draft working document showing a preliminary list of recommendations is available for review in advance. 

 

Volunteer for Spring Into Whitman Days

The Office of Admission is looking for more volunteers for the second Spring Into Whitman day for admitted students taking place on Saturday, April 13. Please sign up in advance.

 

Hosokawa Journalism Lecture Next Week

Vann R. Newkirk II, a senior editor at The Atlantic and the host and co-creator of narrative podcasts “Floodlines” and “Holy Week,” will deliver the 2024 Hosokawa Lecture on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. The lecture, titled “Storytelling Against the Crisis,” considers the twinned issues of a climate crisis and racial inequality and whether the tools of journalism—oral history, documentary and photography—can stand in the way of an apocalypse.
