Mia Mask: Movies, Museums and the Black West
|
Author Mia Mask, Professor of Film at Vassar College, will visit Whitman for two events this week in conjunction with the “Timber Culture” exhibition at Maxey Museum, curated by director and founder of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center, Gwendolyn Trice. Mask’s teaching areas include African American cinema, documentary history, feminist film theory and African national cinemas. Her cultural commentary can be heard on National Public Radio.
On Thursday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Theatre at Hunter Conservatory, Associate Professor of Art History Lisa Uddin will moderate a conversation with Mask and Trice titled “Movies, Museums and the Black West.” The discussion will draw on Mask’s film scholarship and Trice’s public history work. On Friday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. in Olin Hall, room 129, Mask will talk about her book, “Black Rodeo: A History of the African American Western.” (Flyer attached.)
