Timber Culture: Seeking an Inclusive American Narrative
|
The History department presents two events this week featuring Gwendolyn Trice, founder and executive director of the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center (MHIC) in Joseph, Oregon.
Today at 5 p.m. in Olin Auditorium, Trice will present "Timber Culture: Seeking an Inclusive American Narrative." Trice is the descendant of Black loggers, and her work at the MHIC includes 240 acres of land that includes the original historical townsite of a segregated logging community called Maxville.
Tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Maxey Hall W45, Trice will present "Inside the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center" and discuss new archiving and surveying projects at MHIC and the potential for building an inclusive history as well as meaningful public history internships for Whitman students. A buffet lunch will be served.
These events are sponsored by the Virgil Robert and Mary L. Bierman Endowment for the Study of the History of the American West.

Semerdjian Publishes Articles on Armenian Genocide
|
Professor of History Elyse Semerdjian recently published a translation of Armenian Feminist Zabel Essyan's “Liberation of non-Muslim Women and Children" in the Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies. Essayan was the only woman among the 250 Armenian intellectuals targeted for arrest and disappearance by Ottoman authorities at the outset of the Armenian Genocide. The 1919 report urged the international community to rescue and recuperate trafficked Armenian women who were subjected to forcible assimilation and sexual abuse. Special thanks goes to colleague Adeline Rother for reviewing the French translation prior to publication. Another publication, "Phantom Limbs, Embodied Horror, and the Afterlives of the Armenian Genocide." was published in Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East and is part of a larger study of Armenian pilgrimages and human remains in the unmarked killing fields of the Syrian Desert.

This survey was developed by the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium, and Whitman will be able to compare results with other schools.
