The Journey is the Reward

Inscribed jewelry has long served to help people keep important messages close at hand—like the fabled king whose ring reminded him that “This too shall pass.”

For Whitman College alum Marshal McReal ’84, it’s a leather and silver bracelet engraved with the quote “The journey is the reward.”

It’s a message that has served McReal well, from his 300-mile trek along the Camino de Santiago in Spain to his everyday work as a principal of Garde Capital, a wealth management firm he co-founded in 2009. Now, he hopes that part of his legacy is to give Whitman students the opportunity to absorb this mantra as well.

McReal recently established a $1 million estate gift to help support the journeys of talented students who may otherwise lack the means to attend and thrive at Whitman.

McReal feels strongly about education’s role in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. “I believe education can be the great equalizer,” he says. “Giving talented young people an excellent educational experience at Whitman will enhance their opportunity to compete in the marketplace. Creating access for traditionally underserved populations helps level the playing field.”

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

Positive COVID-19 cases in our campus community are noted in Whitman Today in compliance with state regulations. We also update the data in our COVID-19 Dashboard every Monday.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that over the weekend, eight people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation for 10 days in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines. Though the likelihood of transmission is low due to our campus COVID-19 protocols, it is possible that others may have been exposed to COVID-19. There is nothing you need to do at this time aside from following our campus COVID-19 protocols. Anyone identified through the contact tracing process as a close contact (within 6 ft. for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours) will be personally notified.
