Voice Students Competition Results

Nine Whitman voice students recently competed at the Inland Northwest Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, hosted by Central Washington University. 

 

Competition Results:

  • David Kretz '25 (music minor): 1st Place in the Lower College Musical Theatre category
  • Carmel Stephan '25 (music performance major): 3rd Place in the Lower College Musical Theatre category
  • Gillian Mackay Brown '23 (music performance major): 1st Place in the Upper College Musical Theatre category
  • Cade Gordon '25 (music performance major): 2nd Place in the 2nd Year Classical category
  • Also representing Whitman: Aziz Sahbazovic '24, Cyri Nemecek '23, Ravi Narayan '23, Stella Coomes '25 and Sarah Earing '26

Students competed against singers from other universities in Central Washington, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon and Northern Idaho.

 

Noteworthy

Professor Emeritus Publishes Memoir

Phillips Professor of Geology & Environmental Studies Emeritus Bob Carson has published a memoir, "Adventure" (Keokee Books). About half of the book's chapters are about travel, research, and mountaineering and whitewater adventures on six continents and dozens of islands, mostly with Whitman students and alumni. 

Professor Publishes Book on Maria Montessori

Paul Pigott and William M. Allen Professor of Philosophy Patrick Frierson has published a new book on Maria Montessori, The Moral Philosophy of Maria Montessori: Agency and Ethical Life (Bloomsbury). The first scholarly exposition of Montessori's moral philosophy, it presents an empirically-grounded ethics that takes its start from our tendency to strive for excellence and emphasizes mutual respect, social solidarity and love.

Strategic Priority Input Sessions

The week after the Thanksgiving break, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee will hold sessions in order to gather initial input on possible new priorities that might be added to the existing ones. The more input from our community, the better! If you wish to participate, please plan to attend one of the following sessions.

A town hall on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-racism will also take place on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m., and will importantly inform our planning as well. 

 

Employee Resources for Caregivers

Caregiving for loved ones can create financial, emotional and other stresses. This month, Canopy (Whitman's Employee Assistance Program) features resources for caregivers. To access, log in to canopywell.com.

COVID-19 Updates

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that over the weekend, five people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. 

 

Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Additional masks and rapid test kits are available in the front entryway at the Welty Student Health Center during normal operating hours.
