On Saturday of Installation weekend, President Sarah Bolton moderated a panel discussion titled “Higher Education for a Changing World” which explored ways that higher education can serve to both empower individuals and advance just societies in today’s rapidly changing world.

Santana-Acuña Featured in Spanish Newspaper
|
Associate Professor of Sociology Álvaro Santana-Acuña was recently featured in a lengthy reportage published in the Spanish newspaper El Diario on fake news, deepfake and disinformation in the age of artificial intelligence. Since 2021, Santana-Acuña has taught the course “Sociology of Big Data: Algorithms, Robots, and Digital Societies,” which includes class participation by Whitman alumni working in the big data sector.

The COWS are Playing Hide-and-Seek!
|
The Center for Writing and Speaking (COWS) hid 96 cows around campus (in and out of doors). Today and tomorrow, if you find a cow, bring it to the COWS (Olin 191) to win a prize. Bring a cow with a star on its belly and win a grand prize! Bring a cow with two stars on its belly and win an even grander prize! (See attached flyer.)

Outhouse Film Screening Tonight
|
Join the Outhouse (Environmental Interest House) for their last event of the semester, a screening of an award-winning documentary film, tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Maxey 104. “Dammed To Extinction” (view trailer) is a 50-minute film detailing how the lower four Snake River dams harm salmon populations, and in turn the critically endangered orcas that depend on the salmon for survival. This event will also include free pizza and stickers! (See attached flyer.)

Adjusted Hours: Sherwood, Climbing Gym
|
Sherwood Athletic Center will have adjusted hours this week as follows:
|
- Tuesday, May 9–Wednesday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Thursday, May 11–Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4–8 p.m.
- Sunday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Climbing Gym will have adjusted hours this week as follows:

- Tuesday, May 9–Thursday, May 11 from 5–8 p.m.
- Friday, May 12–Sunday, May 14 from 3–5 p.m.

Inclusive Excellence Awards on Thursday

The Division of Diversity and Inclusion invites you to the inaugural Inclusive Excellence Awards on Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom (RSVP).
