2024 Sweet Onion Crank Climbing Competition

The 31st Whitman College Sweet Onion Crank Climbing Competition happened last weekend on April 20. This is a student run and student organized event that typically happens during Renaissance Fair weekend and has competitors from colleges and universities all over the northwest. Jonah Small ’25 was the student coordinator for this event and did an amazing job.
Congratulations to the following Whitman students who placed in the top three in a category:

- Keathley Pinney Brown ’24 (1st place, women’s open; 2nd place in finals)
- Catherine Gallo ’27 (3rd place, women’s recreational)
- Lily Iseminger ’27 (3rd place, women’s advanced)
- Corin Iudicello ’27 (3rd place, men’s advanced)
- Orion Killian ’27 (2nd place, men’s open; 3rd place in finals)
- Ben Mesko ’27 (1st place, men’s recreational)
- Ingrid Noren ’27 (1st place, women’s recreational)
- Grace Remmert ’25 (2nd place, women’s open; 1st in finals)

A total of 114 students participated from 10 different schools: Central Washington University, Eastern Oregon University, Eastern Washington University, Oregon State University, University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Walla Walla University, Washington State University, and Whitman College.

Emergency Alert Test: Were You Notified?

Yesterday at 10:55 a.m., we carried out a test of the Whitman Emergency Alerts system, which sent notifications by email, text, phone call and to the Everbridge app.
If you did not receive the test alert on your mobile device, please follow these steps to update your emergency alert information:

- Log on to my.whitman.edu.
- Select the “Profile” tab on the left.
- Select “Campus Alerts.”
- Enter or update your information as needed.

Greenhouse Plant Giveaway Today
|
The Greenhouse will be giving away plants on Friday, April 26 from noon–2 p.m. at the picnic table between the Hall of Science and Penrose Library. New plants will be brought out every 30 minutes. Donations of used pots or clean plastic containers that can be used as pots will also be accepted.

“Tortoise or Hare” Geology Talk on Monday
|
The Geology Department will host a talk by Juan Carlos de Obeso, Distinguished Lecturer for the Mineralogical Society of America and Assistant Professor of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Utah, on Monday, April 29 at 10 a.m. in Olin 129. The talk, titled “Tortoise or Hare: Dissolution Rates of Plagioclase and Implications for Carbon Storage,” explores the carbon sequestration potential of basalt, which is common in our area. “Feminista Frequencies” Talk on Monday
|
Mónica de la Torre, Associate Professor of Media and Expressive Culture in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University, will deliver a talk titled “Feminista Frequencies: Listening to Chicana Voices on Washington’s Radio Airwaves” on Monday, April 29 at 7 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. The talk will explore how community radio’s past can inform current production strategies to further harness the cultural power of collective media production. (Flyer attached.)

Human-Centered Design Open House Next Week
|
The Human-Centered Design (HCD) concentration will hold a Showcase & Charcuterie open house event on Friday, May 3 from 4–5 p.m. in the Technology Services building. Enjoy some refreshments and provide feedback on classroom prototypes and branding ideas created by HCD students. (Flyer attached.)
