Five Whitties To Study at Oxford Spring Semester

Off-Campus Studies is delighted to announce that five Whitman students will study abroad at the University of Oxford in the Spring 2024 semester—a record number since our partnership with the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) began ten years ago.

  • Houla Chorfi ’25 (Gender Studies and Sociology double major) - Hertford College, Oxford
  • Eliza Daigle ’25 (BBMB major) - St Edmund Hall, Oxford
  • Angela Eliacy ’25 (Politics and Economics double major) St Anne’s College, Oxford
  • Katherine Ellis ’25 (English) St Catherine’s College, Oxford
  • Elle Palmer ’25 (Asian and Middle Eastern Studies & Politics double major) St Anne’s College, Oxford

Congratulations to these accomplished Whitties who will experience the “Oxbridge” model of education in which students work one-on-one with faculty tutors researching very specific topics related to their major.

OP Rental Shop Discount for Winter Break

The Outdoor Program (OP) Rental Shop will be renting gear over the winter break at a 5-day rental rate, including downhill skis and new boots that recently arrived. The Rental Shop is located on the lower level of Reid Campus Center and is open weekdays from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Early Deadline for December Payroll

The timing of the upcoming break (Dec. 25– Jan. 2), will result in a tighter timeline for payroll processing. Employees need to submit timesheets by the end of day on Monday, Dec 18 and supervisors need to approve them by Tuesday, Dec 19. Supervisors must approve any time off prior to approving timesheets. Because of the short timeline, no corrections can be made after payroll processing begins. If you discover errors to timesheets after you sign them, please contact hr@whitman.edu and the error will be corrected with January payroll. For this pay period, a full-time employee will report 176 hours.

Photo Finish

A group of students (one in an orca costume) point to words and illustrations on a green chalkboard.

O'Donnell Visiting Educator Jamie Workman used role playing exercises in two fall semester courses, “Turning the Tide” and “Owning the Wild” (pictured). Students stepped into the roles of commercial and artisanal fishers, scientists, seaweed farmers, ecotourism operators and government officials negotiating a restorative approach to depleted fisheries in tropical coastal villages. In the process, the students gained hands-on practice developing policy briefs, grant proposals, op-eds and more.
