Musical Inclusion and the Unheard Terms of DEI Work
|
Virginia Tech professor Anthony Kwame Harrison, Ph.D., will deliver a lecture titled “Musical Inclusion and the Unheard Terms of DEI Work” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2 in Maxey Auditorium.
In his talk, Harrison will discuss various ways in which sound—most notably associations between types of music and distinct racial identities—contributes to people’s feelings of belonging and/or estrangement within social spaces. Drawing from examples including the history of hip-hop on college campuses, the deployment of music for national security purposes, and songs played at New England ski areas, he promotes music as a dynamic social force and argues that sonic environments should be recognized as important dimensions of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work.
This lecture is sponsored by the Charles R. Lewis Lecture in Political Science Endowment, the Anthropology Department, the Indigeneity, Race, and Ethnic Studies Department and the Division of Diversity and Inclusion.
