Faculty Development: Thriving & Revitalizing at Mid-Career

Colleges in the Northwest 5 Consortium (NW5C) collaborate in a number of areas, including funding for community engaged learning, supporting and connecting faculty of color, and fostering scholarly productivity with virtual writing groups and professional development. In the 2023–2024 academic year, the NW5C is sponsoring a series of faculty development sessions related to Thriving and Revitalizing at Mid-Career.
Sessions are facilitated by Vicki Baker (pictured), Professor of Economics and Management at Albion College, whose publications include “Charting Your Path to Full: A Guide for Women Associate Professors,” “Success After Tenure: Supporting Mid-Career Faculty,” “Developing Faculty in Liberal Arts Colleges” and “Managing Your Academic Career: A Guide to Re-envision Mid-Career.” The four-session series spans the following topics:

Candles for Peace Event Tonight
|
The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life will host a “Candles for Peace” event tonight at 6 p.m. on the Memorial Building steps (library side). This short gathering will provide space for quiet reflection as a table of candlelight is created. (Flyer attached.)

Pete & Hedda Reid Award Nominations Due Today
|
Each year, the Pete & Hedda Reid Award recognizes one Whitman faculty or staff member for their exceptional volunteer work within the community. The online nomination form closes tonight at midnight. The award recipient will be honored during a Chamber of Commerce Awards Ceremony and will receive $1,000. Candidates must have worked at Whitman for at least three years. (Review past recipients.)

The South Asian Student Association will host a “Desi Gala” on Friday, Dec. 1 from 6–9 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. This event is open to the Whitman community and will include activities, performances and food in celebration of the South Asian diaspora at Whitman College. (Flyer attached.)

Outdoor Journal Film Screening Tomorrow
|
The Whitman Outdoor Journal is celebrating the release of its second publication with a film screening of “Abstract: A Freeski Exhibition” on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium. Copies of the Whitman Outdoor Journal will be available at the event while supplies last. (Flyer attached.)

Library Seeks Feedback on Online Tools
|
Penrose Library announces a trial of several new tools. LibKey is a tool that makes accessing articles from Sherlock easier. LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that helps find Penrose Library articles while searching off-campus. BrowZine is a web app that allows you to browse scholarly journals. Visit the Penrose Library Blog to learn more about each of these tools. If you notice any display or technical issues, report them using the Penrose Library Report A Problem Form. Freedom Songs is a program created and organized by students that lifts up various forms of music and art to recognize the differences in our society. The 2023 Freedom Songs Concert is tonight at 7 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium.
