Find Connection Through Sorority & Fraternity Life

The impacts of quarantining and virtual life are only now beginning to be measured. One difference I have observed is that today’s college students sometimes struggle with how to make friends. In my professional opinion, joining a sorority or fraternity is the answer. It only takes a few minutes to Register for Recruitment—the first easy step to plug in to the no-cost, no-obligation opportunity to connect with all of the Greek-letter organizations at Whitman.

Attend Recruitment events to learn more about the organizational cultures, expectations of membership, financial obligations, policies on anti-hazing, academic standards, signature events and what it’s really like to be a member. To get a sweet taste, all students are invited to the Pre-Recruitment Ice Cream Social on Ankeny Field today from 6–8 p.m. It’s a great way to meet members and play some yard games in a relaxed environment.

For Panhellenic Recruitment (organized for the four sororities: Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma), potential new members are matched with a neutral Recruitment Counselor, called a Rho Gamma, who is solely invested in helping students discover which of their personal values align with the different sororities as they make decisions through the mutual selection process. Recruitment events this fall have a flexible schedule from Sept. 16–22, with an invitational Tea Day round on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Bid Day at Prentiss on Sunday, Sept. 24.

For Interfraternity Council Recruitment (organized for the four fraternities: Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Phi Delta Theta), potential new members are invited to attend as many or as few organizations’ events as they choose. Each fraternity hosts both a party and a trip during the weekends of Sept. 15–17, Sept. 22–24 and Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Fraternity Bid Day is on Monday, Oct. 2, Thinking Day for potential new members is Tuesday, Oct. 3, and Bid Acceptance Day is Wednesday, Oct. 4.

After bids (invitations to join) are extended by the organizations, and those invitations are accepted, new members are matched with an experienced mentor to guide them through the transition to membership. These mentors, and the other sisters/brothers in the organization, sincerely take an interest in helping new members to be the best versions of themselves. Sororities and fraternities inspire members to impact the world in positive ways and support each other through thick and thin.

If you’re looking for connection and deep, lifetime friendships, look no further than Whitman Sorority & Fraternity Life. It’s the most meaningful thing I did during my college years, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
