Indigenous Beadwork Workshop
|
Visiting artist Sequoia Conner (San Carlos Apache, Choctaw, Warm Springs) led a traditional indigenous arts workshop on campus last weekend, giving participating students, staff and faculty an opportunity to practice the art of beadwork. The workshop took place in conjunction with Conner’s visit to Acknowledging Land, a First Year Seminar course taught by Lisa Uddin, Associate Professor of Art History and Paul Garrett Fellow.
Conner (pictured above, far right) has been making beadwork since childhood, for friends, through commissions and at community events, such as the Pendleton Round-Up. She has served as Member at Large for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation Youth Council, Secretary for the Native American Board of Representatives and is currently the Traditional Arts Coordinator at Crow’s Shadow Institute for the Arts. Previously, Conner shared her knowledge with the Whitman community as an artist-in-residence in Fall 2021, which included an exhibition of her work.
