International Students Enjoy Columbia River Trip
|
Earlier this month, 16 Whitman international students who are on campus for the summer joined three Whitman staff members for an evening trip to Wallula Gap to go paddleboarding on the Columbia River.
Greg Lecki, Director of International Student and Scholar Support Services, and Stuart Chapin, Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs, collaborated to plan and coordinate this third annual trip for international students. Lish Gutierrez, Outdoor Program Rental Shop Manager, helped lead the outing and Laura Cummings, Assistant Director for International Student & Scholar Support & Faculty-Led Off-Campus Studies, provided additional support.
The group enjoyed a pleasant midsummer evening on the water, with almost no wind and temperatures in the mid-90s.
According to Gutierrez, “It was a fantastic time for students to get off campus, to get to know fellow international students more closely and try a new outdoor activity with the support of the Outdoor Program on the beautiful Columbia River!”
If you would like to coordinate an outdoor trip for your office or department, please contact the Outdoor Program.

Jason Ralston Publishes Two Research Articles
|
Assistant Professor of Economics Jason Ralston recently co-authored two research articles. The first, “Prosecutor plea bargaining and conviction rate structure,” shows that incentivizing plea bargaining can result in large differences between the plea deal and the trial threat, which can increase the number of innocent people being convicted of crimes they did not commit. The second article, “An experimental exploration of reasonable doubt,” concludes that varying the definitions of “reasonable doubt” for jurors does not have an appreciable effect on their behavior.

Photo (Mark Bagby): Whitman College takes emergency preparedness seriously. Last month, a group of Whitman employees participated in a three-day FEMA training course titled “Multi-Hazard Emergency Management for Higher Education.” Participants learned about emergency planning, risk assessment and how Whitman prepares for and responds to emergency situations. The course culminated in a real-time simulation, with previous course participants calling in as actors to create realism for an imagined on-campus scenario.
