Division of Diversity and Inclusion Annual Report
Feature by: Dr. John Johnson, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
"No Me Vas A Creer" ("You're Not Gonna Believe Me") by Rami Ramirez ’25 is going up at Stevens Gallery. The installation is supported through a DEIA Cultivation Grant awarded by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion.
The Division of Diversity and Inclusion was active and productive throughout the 2022–2023 academic year working to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism at Whitman. The Division’s efforts for the year are summarized in a report that is now published on the college website. Divisional efforts are provided across the three primary functional areas: Identity and Belonging, Equity and Compliance, Inclusive Excellence.
A campus Town Hall is being organized for later this month to discuss DEIA at Whitman and address any questions or concerns related to the activities detailed in the report. As we work to advance inclusive excellence at Whitman, we want to invite anyone from the campus community to feel free to submit suggestions and recommendations directly to the Division at diversity@whitman.edu. We welcome your feedback and input regarding this critical work.

Kaufman-Osborn Publishes Essay in The Edge
Baker Ferguson Professor of Politics and Leadership Emeritus Timothy Kaufman-Osborn recently published “Why Republican Lawmakers Should Ban ‘The Federalist Papers’ from America’s Classrooms.” In this essay, Kaufman-Osborn asks whether Republican state lawmakers are smart to require college and university students read “The Federalist Papers,” as they recently have in several states. He argues that were these legislators to read these arguments in favor of the new nation’s proposed constitution, they might come to understand why their authors would condemn the GOP’s contemporary efforts to disenfranchise their opponents and would furthermore insist that any government propelled to power by such antidemocratic means must be overthrown.
