Takemoto Receives Honorary Degree
|
Akira Takemoto, adjunct assistant professor of Asian and Middle Eastern studies, received an honorary degree from Doshisha University for his contributions to the Associated Kyoto Program (AKP), a consortium of 13 liberal arts colleges in the United States that sponsors a study abroad program to Kyoto, Japan.
Takemoto arrived on Whitman campus in 1983, has served on the AKP board and executive committee for more than 30 years, including two terms as board chair, and brought the AKP administrative office to Whitman College. He also helped to establish scholarships for Doshisha University students to study at Whitman College.
In addition to teaching classes on Japanese language, classical Japanese Literature, and traditional Japanese aesthetics, Takemoto has been teaching tea and tea aesthetics at Whitman College since 1984 and has designed a number of tea rooms including the Chikurakken on Whitman campus.

If you lose an item on campus, here are a few things you can do to find it:

Send an email describing the item and when and where it may have been lost to the lostandfound@whitman.edu listserv.

Check with building administrators in any building where you may have left the item.

Ask Security if the item has been turned in to them. Found items are stored at the Security Office in the Whitman College Technology Services building. Unclaimed items are donated quarterly to local thrift stores.
If you find an item on campus that appears to be separated from its owner:

Send an email describing the item and when and where it was found to lostandfound@whitman.edu. (Note: please do not ever share information or images that include sensitive personal information such as birthdates, credit/debit card numbers, etc.)

Leave items found in campus buildings with the building’s administrative staff.

Turn in found items to Security by calling 509-527-5777.

Campus-Wide Emergency Preparedness Training
|
All members of the Whitman community should participate in one of this year's hourlong emergency preparedness training sessions next week in Maxey Auditorium. The training will be identical and will cover important information to help students, faculty and staff prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, Sept. 15:
- 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m.

Student Employee Orientation Thursday

Are you a student working your first on-campus job? The Career and Community Engagement Center invites you to Student Employee Orientation on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m. in Reid Ballroom. You will learn about payroll, campus expectations and some important skills you can develop in your jobs, Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

Maxey Museum and Sheehan Gallery Collaborative Exhibit
|
The Maxey Museum and Sheehan Galley's collaborative exhibition, "time } creature } portal | self," opens today. The exhibit features 15 faculty and staff participants from the Studio Art and Art History departments as well as Maxey Museum and Sheehan Gallery staff.
Exhibition Hours:
- Tuesday-Friday: 12-5 p.m.
- Saturday-Sunday: 12-4 p.m.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that since yesterday, two people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19.
Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. Mask use will be required during the first couple of weeks of classes.
If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Additional masks and rapid test kits are available 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Welty Student Health Center.
