Visiting Writers Reading Series Welcomes Derrick Austin
|
Whitman College welcomes award-winning poet Derrick Austin for the 2023–2024 Visiting Writers Reading Series. Austin will speak and read excerpts from his published poems tonight at 7 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. (Flyer attached.)

Derrick Austin earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from the University of Michigan. He has been awarded fellowships from Stanford University, The Wisconsin Institute of Creative Writing, and Cave Canem, and was an Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholar for 2022–2023.
Austin is well known for his previous works, “Tenderness” (2021) and “Trouble the Water” (2016). His first chapbook, “Black Sand” (2022), was honored as a finalist for several poetry awards. Much of his work focuses on topics of race, sexuality and identity.

Austin’s poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. He has had poems and essays commissioned by The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, The New Museum, Craft Contemporary, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts, LAXART, and The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.

Campus Athletics Activities This Weekend
|
It will be a busy weekend for our athletics facilities this weekend. In addition to home basketball games on Friday and Saturday and home tennis matches on Saturday, Whitman College will also host Walla Walla High School swimmers for the District 4 and District 8 Championships on Friday, Feb. 9 and Saturday, Feb. 10. Please note that parking is going to be limited around Baker Ferguson Fitness Center and Sherwood Athletic Center, so plan accordingly.

Open Lacrosse Tryouts Next Week
|
The Whitman College varsity women’s lacrosse team will hold open tryouts for the upcoming season on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 4:15 p.m. Students of all experience levels are encouraged to try out. Varsity sports do require significant commitment with practices most days of the week and travel for competition. New Active & Fit Benefits for Employees
|
Beginning this year, the Active & Fit’s online library of more than 12,000 on-demand workout videos are now available for free to Whitman employees who register for an Active & Fit Direct account (using the link from your myWhitman account). (Flyer attached.) During registration you will be encouraged to sign up for a monthly membership to their network of gyms for a flat rate of $28/month, but you are not required to do so to access the video library. During the month of February you can sign up for a gym membership with no enrollment fee, using the “STARTSTRONG” promotional code.
