Celebrating Black History Month
|
Feature by Tebraie Banda-Johns, Director of the Intercultural Center:
|
Black history is American history! Every February, we celebrate the dopeness of Black people in this country. The recognition of Black history cannot be contained within a month with 28 days but should be uplifted throughout the year. As we learn more about Black history, we can begin to unlearn and dismantle oppressive systems that must be disrupted in order to achieve true equity and inclusivity for all marginalized identities.
At the Intercultural Center, we have a series of events to honor Black brilliance! We encourage you to come to these events to celebrate Black history, to learn about Black resilience, and to continue the lifelong process of liberating yourself from harmful socialization.
• Thursday, Feb. 2 (more details below): “How Black College Students Learn Code Switching” • Thursday, Feb 9: “I Am Not Your Negro” (film and discussion) • Friday, Feb. 10: Black Culture Game Night • Wednesday, Feb. 15: Black Mental Health Matters • Thursday, Feb. 28: “Kiki” (film and discussion)
Follow us on Instagram (@interculturalcenter_whitman) to know what’s happening this month. All film screenings will be closed captioned. Please email questions and accommodation requests to Tebraie Banda-Johns.

Whitman scholar-athletes proudly represent the college on the playing field and in the classroom. At Whitman, students do not have to choose between excelling in academics and athletics. They are able to contribute toward the Whitman community while developing critical skills in leadership, teamwork and perseverance. Join us today and tomorrow, Feb. 1–2, for Game On!, our athletics give day. Your support to the W Club Athletics Fund helps elevate all of our Whitman Blues athletes and teams.
