Bringing Empathy Into the Classroom

Tarik Elseewi, wearing a dark blue shirt, gray hat and dark glasses, standing in front of a brick building.

In 2022, Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies Tarik Elseewi received the George Ball Award for Excellence in Advising for his outstanding dedication to students.

As a professor, Elseewi is tasked with imparting knowledge. This year he will teach Introduction to Television Studies, The Middle East in Media, Film and Media Studies Theory and Senior Seminar. But, according to Elseewi, the single most important—and rewarding—aspect of his work is fostering empathy while engaging young people in intellectual conversations of great interest and importance.

“It’s often difficult,” says Elseewi. “We have to talk about really difficult subjects, like racism, homophobia and sexism, and not everyone always wants to go there. But those difficulties hopefully keep my mind sharp and my classes relevant.”

No matter the conversation, he models empathy by listening to students and caring about what they have to say—valuing their thoughts, ideas and beliefs.

Tech Tip

Listservs Are Now Google Groups

Last semester, the Whitman College email listservs were converted to Google Groups. This method offers a new option for how to consume messages from these groups. In addition to being able to receive each email individually or groups of emails in digest form, you can now opt to not receive the emails in your inbox at all and view all of the messages together using the Google Groups app. Managing your settings and subscriptions is also easier now, too. Visit groups.google.com to explore the new Google Groups. Questions? Contact the Help Desk at 509-527-4976 or helpdesk@whitman.edu.
