New Scholarship for Native Students
|
Incoming first-years Aiden Wolf and Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky have been named the inaugural recipients of Whitman's new scholarship—the Šináata Scholarship.
Whitman College has partnered with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) to develop a new scholarship intended for students who are enrolled members of the CTUIR. Indigenous students from other parts of the Pacific Northwest or with close ties to the CTUIR are also eligible for the scholarship.
“The Šináata Scholarship is one of the most generous scholarship programs Whitman College offers,” says Provost and Dean of the Faculty Alzada Tipton. “It honors the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla peoples and represents the close and continuing collaboration between the college and the tribes.”
The Šináata Scholarship [pronounced shin-AHH-tah] covers demonstrated need for the full cost of attendance at Whitman, including tuition and fees, room and board and books and supplies and is renewable for all four years. It builds on a number of other educational initiatives developed under the framework of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Whitman signed five years ago with the CTUIR, including the recent Long Tent exhibition during which the MOA was renewed.
