Grant Helps Connect Students to Local Healthcare Environment
|
Photo by Alissa Cordner: Dr. Paul McLain, medical director at SOS Health Services, discusses his work with a sociology class.
During Fall semester, several faculty and staff members are working with students and community partners on many thoughtful and exciting collaborative projects, which are administered by Whitman's Community-Engaged Learning and Research Initiative (CELRI). This week's feature relates to local health and social disparities.
Associate Professor and Garrett Fellow Alissa Cordner’s “Sociology of Health and Illness” (SOC 209) class was able to explore and connect with the local healthcare environment through the support of a CELRI Collaborative Grant. Over the course of the Fall semester, students met with a diverse range of medical and public health practitioners, including representatives from SOS Health Services, a local nonprofit healthcare clinic providing walk-in services to those without adequate health insurance.
“Their visit was the perfect way for our students to understand social disparities of health in a very tangible and community-focused way," says Cordner. "They described barriers to accessing care experienced by uninsured residents of the valley and talked about initiatives they have put in place to decrease or eliminate as many of those barriers as possible. Learning directly from these community partners allowed students to directly apply the somewhat abstract concepts we had talked about in class.”
