President Bolton Shares Insights on Higher Education in Seattle Magazine
|

Whitman College President Dr. Sarah Bolton joined higher education leaders across Washington state to share their insights on college affordability and access in the September/October issue of Seattle Magazine.
Bolton advocated for increased state and federal financial aid, as well as collective public and private efforts to invest in higher education, especially for low- and middle-income families. She highlighted Whitman’s efforts to increase financial transparency by providing families with an early financial aid guarantee.
Bolton worries the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to ban affirmative action sends a negative message to students of color. In response to this decision, she said, institutions must work intentionally to become “ever more excellent, diverse and equitable, while following the law.”
“The challenges of the future will require leaders from every experience and perspective,” Bolton told the magazine. “Diverse campus communities, and campuses that are genuinely welcoming for all students, are both a moral imperative and crucial to our mission of student learning, thrivin, and preparation for lives of purpose.”

Pogue Published in World-Renowned Wine Journal
|
Kevin Pogue, Professor of Geology, was invited to write the Washington State entry in the 5th edition of the Oxford Companion to Wine. Published last week, it is the world's most respected reference volume on the subject, weighs in at over 7 lbs. and is on the shelf of every wine scholar and sommelier. Pogue's two-page contribution covers history, geography, climate and a wide range of other information. Fun fact: Washington's Chateau Ste Michelle is the world's largest single producer of Riesling!

After several weeks of dozens of students reporting positive COVID-19 tests, there has been a dip in positive cases this week. As of 9 a.m. Friday, seven students have reported positive COVID-19 tests. That is a significant drop from 30 cases reported last week and 32 reported cases the week before. Currently, five rooms of isolation housing are in use.
While there are no plans to regularly report COVID-19 cases in Whitman Today, staff at the Welty Health Center as well as college leadership are monitoring COVID trends closely and will communicate with the campus community as needed.
Thank you to all those taking extra precautions to help keep our community safe. We encourage community members to continue to pay attention to how you are feeling, stay home if you are sick, wash your hands frequently and get flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Information about campus vaccine clinics will be forthcoming.

Photo (Adam Kirtley, Interfaith Chaplain): The Zen Meditation Club gardened in the labyrinth for Samu. The practice–meaning “Give yourself to the work” or “Become one with your working"–involves a balance of concentration and mindfulness that we strive to actualize throughout our daily life. Any daily responsibilities can be an opportunity for samu. However, just doing the work doesn’t mean we are doing samu. The commitment to practice is essential if our work is to be samu.”
