Educators Discuss Impacts of Artificial Intelligence
|
Feature by Mary Raschko, Associate Dean for Faculty Development:
|
In this video, Associate Professor and Microsoft Chair of Computer Science Janet Davis reflects on the differences between “Artificial Intelligence” and “Augmented Intelligence” in relation to tools like ChatGPT. She addresses the challenge of teaching students to use new tools to improve their work, when we do not yet know how to use them well, and considers how pedagogical approaches like “ungrading” that emphasize process over performance may promote better student learning in an age of AI-generated text. Describing ChatGPT as both “terrifying and exciting,” Davis urges using such tools not to avoid thinking but to provoke it.
Earlier this month, Davis co-facilitated a Center for Teaching and Learning event on “Teaching in the Age of AI-Generated Writing.” Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Writing, and Public Discourse Lydia McDermott, Professor of History Elyse Semerdjian, and Director of Instructional and Learning Technology David Sprunger joined Davis in offering individual reflections and then posing provocative questions for discussion. Questions ranged from practical issues related to assignment design to invitations to imagine AI’s potential societal impacts:
|
- Do we need to create new assignments to outrun the capabilities of AI generated work?
- Why might students feel pressure to plagiarize or to use ChatGPT as a shortcut?
- How can we use ChatGPT as a prompt for critical thinking?
- How do we, as a community of thinkers and learners, help each other stay informed and navigate what may be coming with AI technology?

Those unable to attend the session are invited to consult a collection of resources generated for this event and to offer input about further learning opportunities related to AI.
