The cover story in the Spring 2023 issue of Whitman Magazine explores how an idea to tell the story of India’s history in a few maps grew into an exhibit of 100+ artifacts and a scholarly journey.

Associate Professor of Art History Krista Gulbransen spearheaded a four-year effort, working closely with student researchers, to comb through maps and artifacts to tell a story of imperialism and independence in South Asia. The resulting exhibit, “Mapping India: Colonialism, Nationalism, and the Partition of South Asia,” was on display this past semester at Maxey Museum and featured a collection of objects gathered from around the world by Whitman alum Mark Giordano ’88.

Timothy Kaufman-Osborn Publishes Essay

Baker Ferguson Professor of Politics and Leadership Emeritus Timothy Kaufman-Osborn recently published “Not Just a War on ‘Woke’” in Inside Higher Ed. In this essay, Kaufman-Osborn argues that Ron DeSantis’ “war on ‘woke’” in Florida must be understood in relation to the radical right’s national campaign to consolidate its power—even at the cost of destroying American democracy. In addition, Kaufman-Osborn's new book, “The Autocratic Academy,” was recently featured on the New Books Network podcast.
