Historic Gift Supports Washington Students
|
Whitman College will soon be able to meet the full financial need for students from Washington state, thanks to a historic $10 million gift to create the J. Walter and Katherine Weingart Opportunity Scholarship.
Named in honor of J. Walter “Walt” Weingart, who taught history at Whitman for 35 years, and Kathie Weingart, the endowment will expand access to Whitman students from Washington by meeting their full demonstrated financial need. Beginning in 2023 with the Class of 2027, the Weingart Scholarship will eventually impact about 500 Whitman students annually (approximately one-third of the student body) when it is available to all four class years.
The endowment builds on important progress in expanding access and affordability. Financial aid at Whitman has grown by 50 percent since 2015, and as Interim Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid Adam Miller notes, “This new gift will eliminate any remaining barriers to make a Whitman education within reach for Washington state students.”

Glass Recycling Available On Campus
|
Starting this week, Bon Appetit and ASWC Sustainability are returning glass recycling to campus by partnering with community member Chris Lueck, who runs a small-scale glass crushing program called Glass 2 Ground.
Collected glass is crushed into a very fine sand, which can then be used as a greener, cheaper alternative than buying new sand in landscaping and recreational projects. Many local wineries (including Woodward Canyon, pictured here) have partnered with Lueck to provide glass for crushing and use the resulting sand in their landscaping.

|
Glass collection bins are located in residence halls as well as Cleveland, Reid and Jewett Cafe. Staff, faculty and off-campus students should not bring in their glass during the pilot program, as we are not yet able to process large volumes of glass. Please direct all questions about the program to Lucy Wood (woodl@whitman.edu) or aswc_sustainability@whitman.edu.

Positive COVID-19 cases in our campus community are noted in Whitman Today in compliance with state regulations. We also update the data in our COVID-19 Dashboard every Monday.
In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that in the past 24 hours, four people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines.
The risk of viral spread is lower for people who are properly masked and following social gathering restrictions. Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission.
If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Employees should email Human Resources (hr@whitman.edu) to schedule a test. Students can be tested at the back door of Welty from 9:30–11:30 a.m. and 2:30–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and home test kits are available on the weekend from Residence Life staff or Security (509-527-5777).
