Whitman Women’s Basketball Wins Conference Playoffs

Junior psychology major Sydney Abbott dropped a season-high 23 points on 8-12 shooting, senior chemistry-environmental studies major Kaylie McCracken poured in a game-high 24 more, and the No. 6 Whitman College women’s basketball team took down Pacific (OR) 76-57 on Saturday night to win the Northwest Conference Tournament title.

The Blues (26-1) now set their sights on the NCAA Tournament when the field of 64 is unveiled today at 11:30 a.m. PT. The Whitman community is invited to join Coach Michelle Ferenz and the team to watch the NCAA Selection Show on the large screen in Reid Campus Center (RCC).

Thinking About Working: Rise of the Workers

Last week’s Power & Privilege Symposium provided our community with an important pause to allow meaningful analysis of complex issues that influence our lives in various and often unequal ways. This year’s theme, “Beyond the Bare Minimum,” holds up a helpful frame to observe what is happening in the work world in 2022. In particular, evoking the theme allows us to watch how an amazing number of workers are making claims on their current and potential employers to offer something beyond the bare minimum at their workplaces.

 

Building on our recent discussion about the Great Resignation, it seems worth considering how this movement is giving many workers increasing power to assert changes in their work conditions, in their salaries and benefits, in their schedules, and in their ability to influence decisions in their workplace—and what it means for Whitties soon to be entering the job market.

Intern for the Office for Civil Rights in Seattle

Every summer, one Whitman student (rising junior or senior) is accepted to work at the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the US Dept. of Education in Seattle.


To qualify, students need to have significant interest and experience in the Civil Rights Movement and/or have participated in Whitman Teaches The Movement. We know that this eligibility requirement includes a lot of you out there!

This ten week summer internship requires the intern to work 30 hours per week with the OCR. The intern selected by OCR staff will need to complete a separate Whitman Internship Grant application and can receive an educational award up to $4,500. Applicants need to be eligible to work in the U.S.
