Tonight's Third Space Speaker is Ijeoma Oluo
|
Feature by: Dr. John Johnson, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
|
In environments where one cultural narrative or framework reigns over others, where structural power is concentrated in the few and where traditions and systems reinforce hierarchical status relations, a Third Space serves as an interruption to those frames.
Back in spring of 2022, with support from the Johnston-Fix Foundation, and inspired by the work of Baba and Gutiérrez, Whitman College launched the Third Space Speaker Series. The series features scholars, artists, writers and thought leaders who help us advance inclusive excellence by creating an intellectual space where cultural humility, cultural wealth and cultural pluralism converge.
The series has featured a collection of outstanding speakers including: Dr. A.D. Carson, Matika Wilbur, Dr. Lissa Ramirez-Stapleton and Dr. Leigh Patel just to name a few. Best-selling author Ijeoma Oluo joins that group as the featured speaker for the Third Space Speaker event scheduled for this evening at 7 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom.
Oluo is the author of “So You Want to Talk About Race,” “Mediocre” and the forthcoming “Be a Revolution: How Everyday People Are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World—and How You Can, Too.” Publisher’s Weekly describes Ijeoma Oluo’s new book as “forged in fire” and noted scholar, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, recalls witnessing Oluo “enthrall a crowd with an unmatched clarity and conviction, and her mix of seriousness and laugh-out-loud humor, all the while showing a deep and abiding concern for racial justice.”
This is an event you will not want to miss!
