Maxey Museum: Mapping India

"Garlended Bharat Mata" (Mother India) by D. Banerjee.
A new exhibit will open next week in Maxey Museum. "Mapping India: Colonialism, Nationalism, and the Partition of South Asia" tells the story of imperialism in South Asia through historical maps and objects from the collection of Mark and Meredith Giordano. The exhibition takes the viewer from the oldest maps of the region, which reveal the maritime commercial interests of European trading companies in the 17th and early 18th centuries, through maps that mark the acquisition and control of territory at the service of colonialism, to maps that prefigure and document independence and Partition.

"Mapping India" results from several years of collaboration between Whitman alum Mark Giordano ‘88, Associate Professor of Art History Krista Gulbransen, and student researchers, and presents the collection to the public for the first time.
The exhibit runs from January 31 to May 21 and is available for viewing from 12–5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 12–4 p.m. Saturday through Sunday.

Did you or your team win an award or secure a competitive research grant? Were you published? Did your athletic team have a notable win?
