Dialogue & Dignity Series: Sa’ed Atshan

The Dialogue & Dignity Series continues this week with Sa’ed Atshan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and Anthropology and Chair of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College.

Atshan’s areas of research include: contemporary Palestinian society and politics, global LGBTQIA+ social movements, and Christian minorities in the Middle East. He is the author of the book “Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique” and his forthcoming book is titled “Paradoxes of Humanitarianism: The Social Life of Aid in the Palestinian Territories.”

Thursday, May 2:

  • 7 p.m. - Public talk in Olin Auditorium, “On Faith, Peace, and Justice: Reflections from a Queer Palestinian Quaker.” (Flyer attached.)

Friday, May 3:

Noteworthy

Two Professors Publish PFAS Papers

Assistant Professor of Economics Rosie Mueller and Associate Professor of Sociology Alissa Cordner are co-authors on a paper recently published by The PFAS Project Lab. Published in Environmental Health Perspectives, the official journal of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the paper identifies inequalities in drinking water contamination in New Jersey. The findings of the paper, along with data from the PFAS Project Lab, were featured in an article in Bloomberg Law.

Cordner also recently co-authored a paper published in Environmental Science & Technology that described the identification of more than 22,000 PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination sites in Europe.

Asian Night Market on Friday

In celebration of May being Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Month, the Intercultural Center invites the Whitman community to an Asian Night Market event on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. on the Reid Campus Center side lawn. Traditionally, night markets are vibrant, bustling and culturally significant events that have a rich history and are known for their diverse range of street food, entertainment and social gatherings. One Act Play Festival This Weekend

The annual One Act Play Festival consists of plays that are entirely produced by student actors, designers, directors, stage management and technicians. Students who enroll in the fall Playwriting/Write Performance THDN-330A class are invited to submit original scripts for possible production. This semester, performances will take place May 2–5. Tickets (free for Whitman students) are available through the Harper Joy Theatre box office.

 

New Social Justice Concentration Available

This fall, Whitman students will have a new Social Justice concentration option to consider as they pursue their degrees. (Flyer attached.) The concentration’s foundational course, SJ-110-A: Introduction to Social Justice, will be taught in Fall 2024 by Associate Professor of Art History Lisa Uddin. Questions? Email uddinlm@whitman.edu.

Don't miss this traveling exhibit, currently on loan from the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center, which depicts the lives of loggers and their families drawn together from different cultures into logging communities.
