Job Searches Trending Optimistic

By Noah Leavitt, director of the Career and Community Engagement Center.

Today I want to highlight four significant recent developments that may be of interest to the Whitman community:

First, because of the blazing economy, employers are working hard to find new ways to attract the attention of talented college seniors. A new Wall Street Journal story describes how recruiting on college campuses is “roaring back to life.”

Next, fueled by the Great Resignation and the ongoing workplace churn, students seeking positions are in a situation to clearly express their priorities to their potential employers. In a new Inc. magazine article discussing what recent graduates are looking for from employers, workplace diversity, mental health supports and salary transparency were identified as priorities.

Third, and relatedly, the national conversation about creating equity by showing salary ranges seems to be landing here in Washington state a new law will require employers to post more pay and benefit information in job ads.

Finally, and most relevant to Whitman seniors, Inside Higher Ed set the internet on fire a week ago with their story, “Eager to Get to Work,“ unpacking a new survey from TimelyMD. The key take-away? “The telehealth company focused on higher ed surveyed more than 1,000 college seniors and found that 88 percent of the Class of 2022 felt prepared to enter the workforce, and 92 percent expressed hope for the future.”

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that from Friday through Sunday, 19 people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines. Though the likelihood of transmission is low due to our campus COVID-19 protocols, it is possible that others may have been exposed to COVID-19. There is nothing you need to do at this time aside from following our campus COVID-19 protocols. Anyone identified through the contact tracing process as a close contact (within 6 ft. for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours) will be personally notified.

Reminder: N95 and KF94 masks are available every day this week at Cordiner from 8 to 9 a.m. and 12 to 1 p.m.
