Student-Led Community Engagement Opportunities
|
Photo: Whitman Friends and Storytime volunteers paint a mural at Green Park Elementary School.
Each year, with the support of the Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC), students lead programs which provide opportunities to volunteer and connect with the Walla Walla community on a regular basis.
Use the Universal Volunteer Application to apply to many different programs, including:
The Food Justice Program aims to support the work of community partners who address a variety of aspects of our food system. These efforts include packing boxes to be delivered to local food pantries, packing bagged meals for students on free or reduced lunch, or engaging in food distribution events through Blue Mountain Action Council. Questions? Email foodjustice@whitman.edu.
Story Time volunteers travel to elementary and pre-K classrooms, reading to children as a way to improve their listening, speaking, writing, reading, and critical thinking skills while also promoting diversity, acceptance, and the celebration of differing cultures through stories. As several reading destinations are bilingual or Spanish-speaking environments, those who speak or are fluent in Spanish are encouraged to join. Questions? Email storytime@whitman.edu.
Walla Walla Stream Team is partnered with the Tri-State Steelheaders to focus on environmental sustainability and stream habitat restoration. This semester they are focused on wetland mitigation and riparian habitat restoration through weeding, planting, digging, watering, etc. to focus on stream restoration and healthy wetland and stream ecosystems. Questions? Email streamteam@whitman.edu.

Protect Your Whitman Account
|
Securing your online accounts is one of the most important things you can do to protect your identity, both in your personal life and in your Whitman life.
Whitman continues to offer sign-up for enhance account security for all employees and students. All Whitman account holders are strongly encouraged to add this protection to your account (sign up here) as soon as it is convenient.
Please note that all employees who do not sign up during this semester will have their accounts upgraded during the Spring semester, and all student accounts will be upgraded by the next academic year.
Whitman has partnered with Duo Security to enable all Whitman community members to better protect their accounts. Enrolling in Duo adds multi-factor authentication (MFA) verification when you login to MyWhitman. Many of you probably already see something similar when accessing your banking or medical information online. With Duo, you simply need to tap yes/no when logging in vs. typing in a 4- or 6-digit code sent via text message.
This added protection makes it much more difficult to compromise your account, even if bad actors get your password. For more information, read this FAQ or contact the Information Security Office. Safe computing!
