Sarah Hurlburt Earns Pete & Hedda Reid Award
|
The annual Pete and Hedda Reid Award recognizes a Whitman faculty or staff member for their exceptional volunteer work within the community. This year, the award was given to Sarah Hurlburt ’91, Chair and Professor of French and Francophone Studies. President Sarah Bolton presented the award recently at a Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Awards breakfast.
Hurlburt is recognized for her dedicated service with the Frenchtown Historical Foundation, which works to preserve and interpret sites related to a 19th-century mixed community of Native American, French Canadian and Métis families in the Walla Walla Valley.
Hurlburt has been involved in many capacities with the nonprofit organization, including researching and translating historical documents, recruiting and managing student interns, developing relationships with local tribal entities, leading efforts to identify and plant native flowers and trees, educational outreach to local schools, publishing a newsletter and much more. She joined the Executive Board in 2014 and currently serves as President of the Frenchtown Historical Foundation.
This year, the Pete and Hedda Reid Award was given in memory of Bryan Lubbers who worked at Whitman College Technology Services for more than 25 years.
